The highlights: the 16's keep rolling and as do the 12's. The lowlight: the 18's laid an egg as detailed below. Lets do the numbers.
The 16's played for the championship at the Raven Classic at Anderson University. In pool play, they continue to have just enough to again slip past Lincoln 1 25-21, 25-23. They then beat Lincoln 3 25-16, 25-21. Tournament play saw them go three-for-three against Lincoln as they beat Lincoln 2 25-19, 25-19. They advanced to beat the Starlings from Indy 14-25, 25-18, 15-9. They then lost in the championship to Alexandria 22-25, 16-25. Not a bad days work for a tournament we jumped into at the last minute and pulling up an 8th grade setter.
Meanwhile down in New Castle, Coach Jones and the 12's went 2-1. They beat a decent Jay Co. team and a team from state volleyball power Delta. They lost to a team from defending 3A state champion New Castle.
Sliding over to Madison-Grant found the 15-7's going 1-2. They came out on the short end of their second 3-set match of the year with Cass County. They lost to a pretty good 8th grade team from Lincoln in another 3-set match. Then beat the an 8th grade team from Blue River Valley, which was the best team in the pool (in my brother's opinion). Just a handful of points made the difference between being 3-0 in a tough pool and 1-2.
Our upper level teams struggled Sunday. In their defense, I have heard from a couple of people that the competition was really good at Anderson and in Indy. Still, our high school teams are usually pretty solid. Not so yesterday. The 18's went 1-3, 17's Ostapa went 2-3 and Goodspeed went 1-3. Of these, Ostapa was the closest to having success as they lost multiple sets by just two points. Everybody was beating up on each other and 2-3 ended up allowing the CIViC team to finish runner-up by the end of the day.
