What a great way to start the season. It helps that the MAPL is so informal. Nothing like serving from 10' away from the net. I heard lots of positives from Coach Black. She was glowing of her praise for the girls in calling the ball, moving out of base into defense, and doing well in serve receive. Maybe the biggest thing to be worked on at practice might be the cheers! She said earning a tie with Decatur Force was a win. I guess they were clearly the best team in the gym.
18's went to The Academy in Indianapolis with Gretchen where they went 3-1 for the day. They beat one Academy 17's team 25-17 & 25-19, beat North Knox 25-21, 25-6, lost to another Academy's 17's team in a cross-over 20-25, 25-17, 12-15, and beat Tropical Smoothie Cafe 17's 25-10 & 25-11.
The scoring index that the team earned was the highest of the day for the participating clubs even with the defeat. That index number becomes important for seeding when we play at Dunes, Circle City, Munciana, and Florida. Coach Paul and Ben took a team to Jay Co. and went 3-0 on the day. They beat Lincoln's 17's team 25-21 & 25-14. They then beat Winchester 25-9 & 25-21. They finished the day playing Lincoln's 18's team and narrowly escaped with a 25-22 & 25-23 win. I am not totally please that we allowed teams to score in the 20's so often, but how can one be upset over a 3-0 weekend? We will see those Lincoln teams a lot in the coming two months, and they will want some pay back.
Another good day turned in by the 18's. Coach Harshman took a squad up to Niles, Michigan and posted a winning record of 2-1. They lost to Krush's 17-1's team 25-18, 13-25, and 6-15. They rebounded to beat Decatur 25-11 and 25-10. They then played Krush's 18-2's in a cross-over beating them 24-26, 25-15, and 15-10. The 18's have a combined 8-2 record at this point.
Jones and Goodman took their 16's team to Royal Center and Pioneer Jr/Sr. High School for a combined 16's/18's MAPL date. Playing in a five team pool, the matches were just best of two sets. They team split with Krush's 16's team, the only 16's team they would play. They competed well but lost both sets to a Cass Co. 18's team and then a Cass Co. 17's team. H. Durkes and E. Goodman were both mentioned as playing well by the coaches.
