The 18's traveled down to Indy once again only heading for the east side of town this time. All things considered, it was a successful day as they went 3-1. They continue a trend of winning, but they do so closer than it should be. Let us take a moment and look at the numbers.
They beat NIVA from the Elkhart/South Bend area 25-18, 25-20. Then beat Cass Co. 25-13, 25-23 winning their pool. You beat someone 25-13 and then have to hold on to win 25-23. Grrrrr! Crossed over won 25-20, 25-21 against Performance Point from Lafayette and laid an egg while playing for the championship losing to SEIVB 8-25 (yes, eight!) and 19-25.
Passing continues to be an interesting skill for this team. If I may steal from A Tale of Two Cities, "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times." The best is their overall passing: M. Campbell passing 2.08, M. Herr 1.99, E. Garing 1.96, M. Hayslett 1.84, and even J. Goodspeed at 1.73. The worst is when they do not pass well, they pass terribly: M. Campbell is aced 9.8% of her receptions (this is actually really solid), M. Herr is aced 14.1% of the time (ouch), E. Garing is 14.2% (ouch), M. Hayslett is 11.8% of the time (not bad). and J. Goodspeed at 17.1% (that has to improve).
Of our four primary passers and including Jenna, M. Campbell is clearly performing at a high level. Anything over 2.0 is solid and below 10% is equally solid. Megan's 1.99 is better than her past high school season, but the 14.1% is two percentage points worse. Elizabeth's numbers continue to trend in the right direction. She had a horrid first two club practices at the start of January. She has been digging out of that hole ever since. In tournament play she is passing 2.17! That is fantastic; however, she is still aced 14.5% of the time. M. Hayslett's numbers are the exact inverse of Elizabeth and Megan's. She is not as accurate of a passer, but is not getting aced as often as those girls. Lastly, is Jenna. She is not a primary passer due to that ace percent. 17.1 is a magnet if other teams figure it out. I know I would pound her with serve at 17%.
Give these primary passers a Tip of the Cap. In general they are doing their job and are a big reason this team is 7-1. But why do I use the words "in general"? Because of the ace percents being so high. It complicates our ability to grab control of a set/match and put teams away.
Hitting. I posted attack numbers yesterday for The Academy tournament. Hitting at least for this tournament was a bit of a wash. It did not break our backs, but once more made winning complicated.
M2 was our best hitter statistically. M. Moore hit .269 but was only set 26 times. Was she tipping too much again? I recall four of her kills while there. She hit two slides well for kills, hit a middle quick pretty well for a kill, and was a a little lucky for another middle kill (timing was off). I was only there half the day, but what I saw and see in the numbers indicates that she should have been set a little more often.
M. Herr is a high .200 hitter or low .300 hitter. When she gets hot, she is a .400+ hitter! Lets be blunt, she is center piece of our offense. If she hits .202 on 79 sets, this team will struggle. On this weekend, M1 did not carry the water. PS: that tape on your ear is illegal.
Our left side hitters contributed to our hitting woes. M. Campbell was 2nd on the team in sets with 59, but she only hit .169. That is okay, but it is nothing special. However, J. Goodspeed would have killed for that number. She hit negative (-.022). A left side hitting negative usually makes for a difficult day. We will give Jenna the benefit of the doubt after winning a 3A Basketball State Championship the night before, but man alive, it would have been nice to show off in front of the D3 coach on our court watching Grace.
Our opposite did not give us any kind of a lift. Makayla hit .115 on the day. On top of hitting poorly, she served horrid.
While the chance was there to advance to 8-0, when we consider the hitting was off (especially by M1), the serving was equally off (especially by the opposite), and we were aced at inopportune times, I think 7-1 is reason to be pleased.
