What to expect at a play-date

2/26/2017

I may add to this as the week goes on, and I think or am told of things to add.

1.)  Draws are usually released on Wednesday evening or Thursday.  If they come out earlier, do not be surprised if they change. The 15's draw at V2 is changing.
2.)  Be sure to check the start time and date.  It use to be pretty predictable that elementary and jr. high was Saturday with a 9:00 start.  High School was Sunday with a noon start.  Over the last few years there is little predictable.  For example, we have an 11:00 elementary start this coming Saturday at V2.
3.)  Outside food is rarely allowed at a play date.  Concessions are an important way for clubs to make money which is invested back into the volleyball programs.  I always try to buy a little something.
4.)  I try to buy something because NCIPL events are free entry.

Coach Amie

2/23/2017

We have a lot of good coaches and good people involved with CIViC.  I feel most fortunate to include Coach Amie as a CIViC coach with our upper elementary team and with Carroll as a varsity assistant.  I wanted to make available this link to a great story, which celebrates Coach Amie as a Houghton College star. Enjoy.

What we want from our 13's

2/21/2017

Warning: before reading, prepare to clarify/redefine how you measure success for your children and our CIViC teams.

What I hope we achieve as a club and as Carroll's varsity coach with our young teams may be at odds with what parents, other family members, and even the little girls want. And please allow me to say, more often than not, I am speaking to fathers about this.  I hope we win, but I am not cheering and reinforcing actions that allow us to win at the cost of teaching and developing skills.

The High Bridge Tragedy

2/16/2017

I am on, under, or near the High Bridge often. It is my favorite place to wade and fish the Deer Creek or I am running the trails or tramp back there with my camera.  It pains me that a place I find so beautiful and peaceful is now linked to such horror.

It goes without saying that the two girls, the families, the volunteers who turned out to search for the girls, and even the perpetrator(s) of such stupidity have been in my thoughts and on my prayer list.

It gets a little more personal as Coach Hunsberger, one of our club elementary coaches, needs added to those who need strength through prayer.  Before Coach came to Carroll, she was helping Coach Amie with the Delphi volleyball program.  She coached both of the young ladies just a couple of years ago. Coach texted, "Good kids yes. They were a total joy to be around and fun to coach."

Also Coach Gleason, both Amie, Ben, and their children need to included in prayer.  Their oldest boy is in the same class with the two girls.  I would think that there are some restless moments when thinking of his classmates.

A lot of innocence, personally and collectively, that comes with living and growing up in Carroll County just vanished.

ESPN - Why Volleyball?

Thought this was an interesting story.  I think I blogged about the cross-over a year ago to the Carroll patrons and players.  It is a fairly long article so I included the link if you wish to read in more detail.

"Her decision to pick volleyball over basketball follows a national trend. Two years ago, for the first time, more high school girls played volleyball (432,176) than basketball (429,504), according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. In 2015-16, volleyball added another 4,133 girls to those numbers, while basketball lost 276 participants.

Examine the past decade, and the numbers are more striking. Statistics compiled by the NFHS show an increase of more than 40,000 volleyball players in that span and a decrease of 23,000 basketball players."

Here is the link to the whole story.  You will have to cut and paste to your browser.
