I am sorry to Coach Jordan, Tommie and the girls who were planning on play this Saturday at Southwood. They are not playing due to a decision I made. Let me explain behind the read more break.
13's on 4/20
Last Friday evening, I was in Burlington, IN from 7:30-9:30 for visitation regarding a Carroll volleyball player's grandfather. I have no cell service in Burlington. As we were driving home near 9:45 my phone went off with multiple text messages. Most of the messages involved our 13's team that was to play in less than 12 hours.
Long story short, we did not have enough players. A player had told the coaches weeks if not months ago that she had a conflict. No problem. Then the week of play another player notified us that she was not playing due to a softball conflict. Hmmm. We spoke at length about honoring volleyball play dates in April at our parent meeting 5 months ago. Then on that Friday another player pulls out. We are short. I pulled us out on Saturday around 7:30 AM. The host club could have asked for a "no-show" fee because we dropped so late. They did not. We actually did them a favor by not playing as we were an odd number. It made hosting their tournament easier.
Still, CIViC does not have this issue. Other clubs might struggle to finish the season. We are considered one of the flag-ship clubs in the NCIPL and our ability to fulfill our play dates plays a part in that.. For that matter, as a second level club that does not charge thousands of dollars, we have a pretty good reputation state wide (largely due to our 18's team).
I am not happy with pulling out of Southwood last Saturday.

Keep that fact that I pulled a team on late notice for the first time in years in the back of your mind. On Tuesday, I hear from Coach Ebert that she has five girls playing. I am not letting this play out after the previous week's issue. On Wednesday morning she is up to six. I am still not comfortable. One kid fails to show and we lack a team. I call Southwood (again) and pulled the team mid-afternoon. I am not waiting until the last moment and looking like an idiot! About three hours later, I have not even told Coach Jordan or Tommie what I have done yet, I get a text from Jordan saying she has 7 girls. Oops.
To make things worse, Southwood now has 8 teams. To let us back in would create the odd number that is horrible to host with. There was and is no space for us. Last night I sent a text to each director sending a team hoping someone might be dropping. I heard back from the last director this morning. There are no openings.
So I am saying sorry. We are not playing this weekend because I reacted (maybe over-reacted) to events a week earlier with the 13's.
We are not playing this Saturday at Southwood. I have offered to buy the girls ice cream at a time, date, and place of Jordan and Tommie's choice to make up for not playing this weekend. Again, sorry.
